Mysterious Phone Calls

Dear Ruth,

Strangest thing happened to me last evening while talking to my cousin in Georgia. We ended our call about 8PM because he needed to go to bed.

Around midnight I was talking to someone in California and kept getting beeped on the other line. The called ID said Georgia, but no number or name. When I switched over, all I got was crackling and static sounds. This kept happening and every time I'd get the same noises.

I waited till the morning and tried calling my cousin again, who said he didn't call during the night.

Before I get spooked again, can you give me an explanation for this?

Dear Haunted,

Your experience leads me to believe you have a problem with the mechanical aspects of your phone. Often people will call the same phone number a few times thinking they’ve dialed wrong.

Before I assume someone from the other side was trying to contact you, I called the phone company and posed your experience to the man in charge of customer service who gave me the following ideas;

1. either you or your cousin had not hung up the phone correctly...
2. you may have had a cross connection with another phone...
3. if your cousin to has the busy signal call back service this would explain why your phone kept ringing every five minutes and explain why his state name was on your caller ID.
4. torn wire, trouble in the phone lines, a storm between your location and the caller’s home, the battery on your phone needs replacement, etc.
   

If it was a spirit calling, she or he will call again and again. If this doesn’t happen, assume you had a bad connection.

I hope you don't mind me e-mailing you, but I bought your book on line, on Amazon, and I had it posted to me yesterday and I’ve just finished your book. I have to say I loved it, I look for some books for me to develop again Spiritually, My Nan was always going to Spiritual Church, but never developed herself, and my Mother went to a closed circle to develop, so I’ve been brought up always to believe there is life after life.
I started to develop when I was around 20 years old, I made friends with a women at the closed circle I used to go to and we would practice and go to sites and practice tarot. Then when I was around 24 years old I stopped.

I’m now 34 years old, and feel pulled into wanting to be in contact with spirit again, I have no family as such, no brothers and sisters and have had a lot of life changing events happen to me over the last 3 years, and I am looking for the warmth and confidence I used to receive when I was developing in my 20's with spirit. So I’ve been looking for books for me to do it myself, and I have contacted a women in the local paper to go to a closed circle to develop again, she said they will start in February.

I just wanted to say, reading your book has lifted my mood, and gave me some hope in trying to contact spirit again, and to really thank you for writing your book.

Cat curls up next to dying patients

Providence, R. I. Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing-home patients are going to die, curling up next to them during their final hours.

His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

"He doesn't make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die," Dr. David Dosa said in an interview. He describes the phenomenon in a poignant essay in Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Many family members take some solace from it. They appreciate the companionship that the cat provides for their dying loved one," said Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor of medicine at Brown University.

The signs

Experts suggest several possible reasons that Oscar seems to be able to predict when nursing-home patients will die. The cat may:

• Notice telltale scents when a person is close to death.
• Read something into the behavior of nurses.
• Be seeking pleasures like a heated blanket placed on a dying person.
